where's my song?

So, I decided about a month and a half ago to get serious about working out again. I used to be a runner, and I want to be one again. I decided when I can run five miles in 45 minutes, I'll consider myself a runner. Kind of an arbitrary number, but that's my goal. Anyway, I got a membership to Dixon, the rec center on campus here, in January. So far, I've been using it pretty often trying to get regular doses of weights and cardio. Lately, whenever I work out, I think about those scenes in movies where a little guy is going to take on a guy like the hulk. You know the ones I mean -- the little guy spends weeks pumping iron and running miles upon miles. And, at the end, he's all muscle, fit and ready to defeat the hulk. Have you ever noticed how the weeks of working out never take much longer than the length of a song? There's always some song, like "eye of the tiger" that plays and by the end, the transformation is complete. Ironically, as I type this, we're watching Encino Man and they just turned a cave man from barbarian to babe (well, sort of) during the chorus of "I'm Too Sexy." Case and point. My question is -- why doesn't it work that way in real life? I'm working out and working hard. Even though I'm sure the real way is much more rewarding (or so I'm telling myself), I'm still waiting for my song. I think I'd like it to be the one that plays in the beginning of Dumb and Dumber as the Sheep Dog comes roaring up over the hill.

Kellie,

I too am working on pushing myself harder in my workouts so that I see more results, but I struggle. I never hit that point where I feel like it has gotten easier. Right now, my primary goal is to hit 5 days a week of 4 mile runs (I have never really considered myself to be a runner). I can't seem to make it past 4 days though. Hang in there...maybe we will both reach our goals.

I LOVE Encino Man! Do you guys own that movie?? If so, I want to borrow it please :)

haha, Elisabeth. No, we don't own Encino Man, it was in the "free movies" section of Direct TV. There are some good movies on there!

Yeah, I hear ya Kori. I've been in the "anything is better than nothing" phase, but I'm starting to move into the "I've established the habit, now start working harder" stage. It's rough. I don't see much in the way of results, but others have said they do (of course, it was my mom and my friend who both know I'm working out -- so maybe they're just being nice). In any case, I have a hard time being motivated or prioritizing it sometimes, but it really feels good after a hard workout -- like I've accomplished something! Let's keep each other posted, hopefully we'll both reach our goals :) (oh, and 4 miles, 4 days/week -- I'd say you're a runner)

oh yeah, and one other thing, Kori. If it's not getting easier, that must mean you're doing good at pushing yourself. If it's easy, you've probably stopped making progress. Keep up the good work!!

Thanks for the encouragement Kellie! I have really had a hard time the past week because I have been sick with a cold, so now I need to get back on track this week.

Sometimes being motivated when you're by yourself is hard. Convince Jordan you need a puppy and, I can tell you from experience, you will be doing a LOT of walking, running, playing, etc! I am only going to the rec 2-3 days a week now because I walk or run with Buster every day at lunch! I wish we still lived in the same town and could still be workout buddies, Kellie! :( I miss you!

Very nice! You should do freelance writing. And you should find a way to work "Encino Man" into every article.
